THOMAS A. SPERING – Immediate Past District Governor

 

•Lion TOM SPERING was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA. When he was three, his Father joined the Air Force so he moved quite a bit before graduating from high school in Plains, PA. His travels took him to NJ, IL, NY, WY, SD, WA, PA, and finally FL in 1966.

•Lion TOM attended Gulf Coast Community College for two years, served in the Army for 2 1/2 years, and then graduated from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL in 1973.

•Lion TOM started work for the U.S. Army as a civilian employee at Fort Rucker, AL, followed by Germany, NY, PA, and AZ.

•Lion TOM joined Lions in 1985 soon after moving to Chambersburg, PA (District 14T) from Syracuse, NY.

•Lion TOM held most offices in the Chambersburg Evening Lions Club and was Club President in 1991-92. He sponsored five new Lions and was selected Lion of the Year in 1988.

•Lion TOM joined the Sierra Vista Lions Club in 1994 when he moved to AZ from PA to work at Fort Huachuca as a financial manager for the Army Signal Command. Lion TOM held most offices in the Club and was President twice and a Melvin Jones Fellow. Lion TOM also served as Zone Chair twice.

•Lion TOM served as District Cabinet Secretary in 1997-98 for DG TED Raszka. He was selected 1998 District 21-B Lion of the Year.

•Lion TOM was elected in 1997 to the first District 21-B Board of Directors for the C. Kirby Smithe Lions Youth Exchange Camp. He was elected as President of the Board and reelected a second year. His family was a Host Family for campers the three years.

•He has sponsored four new Lions since coming to AZ - a total of 9.

•Lion TOM was the Executive Secretary for PDG JOE Huntsman for the 2001 USA/Canada in Tucson – received President’s Leadership Medal from President Jean Behar at the end of the Forum.

•Lion TOM served as District Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer for DG CURT Berg. He was selected 2001 District 21-B Lion of the Year.

•Lion TOM was selected on June 2nd to be our 2007-2008 VDG and elected on April 19th as our 2007-2008 District Governor.

•Lion TOM retired on January 3rd, 2008 to be able to devote his time to District 21-B. He retired with 36 years of Federal service.

•Lion TOM is married to Lion BETTY and has two children - a son, JERRY, who works in Sierra Vista and a daughter, Elizabeth who lives in Longview, TX.
